hegira

   (HEH-jih-rah) [Latin, from Arabic hijra: flight; departure] Any journey taken to escape danger or to seek a more desirable place. When capitalized: the flight of Muhammad from Mecca in a.d. 622, seen as the beginning of the Muslim era. Also written hijra.
